Edrich Kotze, NSRI Hermanus station commander, said: At 09h37, Thursday, 21 May, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated to respond to the cliff path, at Dreunkrans, Hermanus, where a dog had been spotted trapped on the cliffside.
NSRI had received a call from a concerned eyewitness after she had heard a dog barking on the cliff path while she was taking a walk. On closer inspection the local lady had noticed a dog appearing to be trapped on a steep incline on the side of the cliff below the cliff path and she raised the alarm calling NSRI.
I live nearby so I went to take a look and indeed the dog appeared trapped on a sheer cliff face and our NSRI crew were activated.
The local lady, who raised the alarm, a Good Samaritan, she remained on the scene and there appeared to be no people in the area who the dog may belong to.
Our NSRI crew responded while we activated HAWS (Hermanus Animal Welfare Society) who dispatched an animal handler to the scene.
On NSRI and HAWS arrival on the scene we negotiated steep barely accessible terrain to reach the dog.
In a coordinated effort we were able to safely get the dog off the cliff to a safe area where the dog was taken into the care of the HAWS animal handler and the dog has been transported to HAWS for care and rehabilitation while efforts to find the owners are being addressed.
The rescue operation was successfully completed at 10h26.
The mixed breed male dog was not injured and appears to be healthy.
NSRI commend the local lady Good Samaritan who raised the alarm and we commend the assistance from HAWS.
