The DA in the Western Cape commends the City of Cape Town on its ongoing commitment to bringing dignity through home ownership to residents. Earlier this month, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed the release of land for two sites for the development social housing — the Salt River Market precinct and the Pickwick Road site.
On 25 August 2022, in my capacity as Chairperson of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Human Settlements, I will be attending the City of Cape Town’s handing over of the Salt River Market precinct for the construction of over 200 social housing units.
The Salt River project will be a mixed-use development that will include open market residential units which will result in capital and operational cross-subsidisation for the development. History will be made as this development will be right in the heart of the city, close to social and economic amenities. The development will include 216 units of social housing.
MPP Matlhodi Maseko says: “I am delighted to see that local governments in the Western Cape have made the demand for social housing projects a fundamental aspect of their long-term planning for growing communities. This development will bring people closer to employment, education, and economic opportunities.
The Standing Committee on Human Settlements will keep a close eye on this development and engage the Provincial Department of Human Settlements regularly on its contributions towards its progress.”
