Coffee Journal Launches Community Wall and Bean Giveaway for South African Brewers

12 October 2026 by CapeTownNewsReader

MEYERTON, Gauteng, South Africa — Coffee Journal, an independent South African specialty coffee publication, has opened a community wall that invites local coffee drinkers to publish their brewing setups, favourite roasters and café reviews, and has attached a bean giveaway to the first entries. The page, titled South Africa’s coffee people, lets members list the machine or brewer they use, the method they brew with, the beans they keep returning to and their city, alongside a photograph of their own setup. The first 50 submissions that the editor approves and publishes each receive a 250-gram bag of whole coffee beans supplied by South African roasters including Pause Coffee and Bluebird Coffee Roastery. Entries close on Oct. 31, 2026, or earlier if all 50 places are filled.

According to Coffee Journal, the wall addresses a gap in how coffee advice is shared. Most coffee guidance online assumes a commercial machine on a granite counter in a country where the power stays on, a setup that does not reflect what most South African enthusiasts actually brew with. The wall is intended to show real local kit, from a hand grinder beside a kettle to a second-hand machine on a kitchen shelf, so readers can calibrate their expectations against it.

“Most coffee advice online does not look like a South African kitchen,” said Bibi Burness, founder and editor of Coffee Journal. “This wall exists so people can see what the coffee community here actually brews with. If it looks small, that is because it is honest. It grows one real person at a time.”

Members can contribute in three ways: a favourite roaster or bean, a coffee-shop review, or a description of their coffee setup. Each submission requires at least one photo taken by the contributor. Coffee Journal said there is no application or vetting process and that membership is free. A free account also unlocks the private brew log, bean shelf and equipment tools. The publication said the beans a member names feed a community favourites list, which it describes as the closest thing the site has to a crowd-sourced buying guide for South African coffee.

The community favourites list is counted rather than curated, according to the publication. It said roasters cannot pay to appear and that the ranking is not weighted toward the roasters the editor prefers. Coffee Journal said it carries no affiliate links, that no roaster funds the site, and that no paid placement exists on the wall. Membership has no paid tier, and the publication states that it is funded independently.

Privacy is handled by design rather than by promise. Only the fields a member chooses to publish appear on the wall: display name, city, brew method, equipment, favourite beans, a short bio and a setup photo. Email addresses are never displayed, and a member’s brew log, tasting notes and bean shelf remain private to that account and are not shown to other members or to search engines. Members can edit or delete any field, and removing a photo removes it from the wall.

“Coffee Journal reads every submission before it goes on the wall,” Burness said. “Real setups from real people, with a photo they took themselves. Nothing is scraped, invented or bought in.”

Coffee Journal was founded in 2026 and describes itself as an independent specialty coffee publication. It reviews roasters, tests water, publishes brew guides and maintains a transparency-based trust-score system, which it says operates with no roaster funding or brand partnerships. Recent work on the site includes coffee roaster reviews of South African businesses, including an Alberton roastery profiled in October 2026, and a subscription-coffee series that tracks beans month by month.

The publication said submissions are open to anyone in South Africa, and that the giveaway is limited to South African delivery addresses. Winners will be contacted at the email address used to submit. Coffee Journal said it uses a submitted email only to reply to the contributor or to confirm a giveaway entry.

Full details of the community wall, the submission forms and the giveaway terms are published on the South African coffee community page. The publication said it will continue to expand the wall as members join, and that the favourite roasters and beans collected there will shape its future roaster profiles and reviews.
