Dear Editor
The DA in the Western Cape has taken note of the arrest of ANC MPL, Danville Smith, on Tuesday following a sting operation by Vredendal police. Smith stands accused of attempted theft of a vehicle and fraud.
Smith’s arrest comes two weeks after his ANC colleague in the Provincial Legislature, Andile Lili, was convicted of incitement to murder.
These events highlights that the ANC is full of hot air when it comes to dealing with corruption and criminality within its ranks.
This is not Smith’s first brush with the law, as he faced allegations of corruption in 2021 which was followed by an appearance before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. In May last year, he “stepped aside” but “[remained] a member of the provincial legislature representing the ANC”.
Smith and his two co-accused are expected to appear before the Vredendal Magistrates Court today and the DA trusts that this matter will be dealt with speedily and without fear or favour.
