Dam Levels at 74,9%

1 July 2026 by Con Tributor

Let’s continue to keep water saving top of mind, even though Cape Town’s dam levels are 74,9%. The water we currently have in our dams will need to last us until next year, without depending on unpredictable rainfall this year.

Cape Town is in a water scarce region and rainfall patterns are unpredictable because of climate change. For this reason, the City’s Water teams will continue to closely monitor dam levels and water use over the coming months.

Typically, dam levels need to be 80% or more by the time the next Annual Operating Analysis (AOA) is done by the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in November to avoid them from implementing water restrictions to a municipality.

Current dam levels are 74,9% as of Monday, 29 June 2026. This is 1,9% more compared to the same time last year, which was 73%.

Water usage is 843 million litres of water a day (MLD) on Monday, 29 June 2026. This is 17 MLD less than the winter usage target of 860 MLD.

Some 70% of water used in high volumes is at home, according to consumption statistics.

‘The one good storm we received in May 2026 doesn’t undo a changing climate. Our dam levels rose from around 44% to above 70% in a matter of days — proof of how unpredictable our rainfall has become. We are not waiting for the rain, and we are not waiting for anyone else. That is why this administration is investing R570 million in our New Water Programme this financial year, and why the Faure New Water Scheme — a public-private partnership — is being released to market. Cape Town is funding its own water security. That investment only pays off if residents keep using water wisely, starting today.’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.

Remember to report burst municipal pipes immediately to the City’s formal channels:
