Over the years the Cape Derby produced a feast of football for local fans. From the early years with matches played at grounds stretching from the Green Point Common to the Cape Flats, a number of local teams have contested this winner-take-all fixture.
The Cape Derby held the imagination of all Capetonians who love the beautiful game since the days when Hellenic, Cape Town City, Glenville, Cape Town Spurs, Lightbody Santos (now Santos) and Seven Stars contested this most prized “Kings of Cape Town” title.
Now it’s the turn of Ajax Cape Town and Santos to keep the tradition of the Cape Derby alive, and over the last 12 years they have done just that.
Since the first Cape Derby between Ajax and Santos in the 1999/2000 season, there has never been a goalless game between these two teams with Ajax edging Santos by a 13-10 win count with 5 draws.
Last season Ajax Cape Town completed the “double” over Santos with a heart stopping 4-3 win at the Cape Town Stadium with Thulani Serero sealing the win with a late goal. In the return game of the season, Ajax beat Santos 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium.
Ajax goes into this game with successive five wins under their belt, whereas Santos lifted themselves from the relegation zone with their first win in their last five games.
However, all the stats and history will be set aside as the teams walk out at the Cape Stadium on Saturday evening to write their own chapter in the history of this fixture. There will be no favours asked-or-given and fans can expect to be on the edge of their seats for the entire ninety minutes.
This game is guaranteed to split friends, families and even communities as they don the colours of their favourite team ahead of the game.
The fireworks are sure to start at the Press Conference scheduled for Wednesday 22 February, 2012 at the Civic Centre, starting at 12h30. Both sets of coaches and captains will be in attendance. Ajax Cape Town’s players will also be in attendance to sign autographs and to meet their fans.
Fans are urged to get their tickets early to ensure their seat at the Cape Town Stadium. Tickets are on sale at all Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets locally. Tickets are also on sale at the ticket office at Cape Town Stadium until Friday February 24, 2012. No tickets will be sold from the Stadium’s ticket office on match day.
A number of fan activations are set to take place in and around the Cape Town Stadium on match day for all fans that arrive early, to enjoy.
