In 2006 a donation was made to UCT for the establishment of the first Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health in South Africa. The donation came from Sue Struengmann who, although residing in Germany, has her roots in South Africa.
Struengmann’s dream is to help children realise their potential and South African children are particularly close to her heart. She also has a very special relationship with children who have been scarred by injuries, particularly as a result of fire.
Because their emotional rehabilitation is complex, Struengmann decided she would best help them by strengthening the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCT. It is in this spirit that she donated the funds to establish a fully funded Chair.
To pay tribute to Struengmann, a disa, cultivated by Emeritus Professor Sid Cywes and his wife, Marlene, was officially named Sue’s Dream. A certificate, painting, and a potted disa were presented to her by vice-chancellor Dr Max Price on 15 November.
The Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health has also been named the Sue Struengmann Chair.
