The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape welcomes the Covid-19 relief funding provided by the provincial Department of Sport and Cultural Affairs to the District Six Museum. The museum in the context of the broader District Six community is not only known for its preservation of the vibrant culture but for its rich history that informs the lives of residents in the province.
MPP Reagen Allen says: “The Covid-19 relief funding demonstrates this provincial government’s commitment towards the remembering, interpreting and safeguarding of our diverse histories.
The funding provided to the District Six Museum in particular comes at a time of the long awaited redevelopment plans in the area by the national Department of Rural Development & Land Reform, and speaks to the spatial and social justice that the Democratic Alliance remains committed to advocating for.”
The museum is one of nineteen other museums which will benefit from the R1.3 million of relief funding to ensure the continuation of the preservation of the rich heritage and culture during Covid-19 and beyond.
MPP Allen adds: “I encourage residents on this Heritage Day to pay a visit to their local museums which have been equipped with the necessary protective equipment to ensure for a safe reopening of business.
I have further submitted a parliamentary question regarding the prospects for a second round of relief funding by the national department and how business ventures in the arts and cultural industry in the Western Cape can benefit after the 6 month hard lockdown”.
The DA in the Western Cape understands that the appeal for the Western Cape lies within its rich cultural heritage and diversity, and will support all efforts in the preservation thereof in the interest of its residents.
