Newlands Rugby Stadium: The Historic Cathedral of Western Cape Rugby: First opened in 1890, Newlands Rugby Stadium served as the historic spiritual home of Western Province and Stormers rugby for over 130 years. It was the site of the opening match of the historic 1995 Rugby World Cup, where the Springboks defeated defending champions Australia. Although the stadium is currently permanently closed as professional rugby relocated to DHL Stadium, Newlands remains deeply woven into the heritage and folklore of South African schoolboy, club, and international rugby.
