The Birth of Cape Town’s English Daily Press: The Cape Times was founded in 1876 by Frederick York St Leger as South Africa’s first morning daily newspaper. It quickly established itself as a cornerstone of English-language journalism in the Western Cape, covering local, national, and international affairs for over a century. Built to compete with established weeklies and bi-weeklies, the paper adopted a traditional broadsheet style that focused on parliamentary coverage, commercial reporting, and civic news. Over decades of shifting political tides, the Cape Times played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse in the mother city.
