25 film students from Afda Film School are waiting out the storm on Dassen Island, off-shore of Yzerfontein on the West Coast.
The 25 students are filming a project on Dassen Island, since Monday, but were unable to be collected on their predetermined return day, by their charter boat, due to the storm that converged on the Western Cape late on Monday.
It appears that they were not aware that the storm was due. They are in no immediate danger.
NSRI Yzerfontein station commander Andre Nel said that the students are all safe on the island and yesterday an NSRI Yzerfontein rescue craft was dispatched to the island to deliver extra supplies to the students and to check on their safety.
Andre said that the students have adequate sleeping arrangements and supplies and they are being checked on, from time to time, by the Islands resident Cape Nature Conservation Officer.
Andre said that the students are all in high spirits and appear to be treating their extended stay on the island as an adventure. There are also 3 builders on the island who are currently working on routine repairs to the lighthouse.
As soon as the weather clears sufficiently the students charter boat will go and fetch them.
The students have been provided a 24 hour emergency number and the NSRI are staying in regular contact with the students. They are all in contact with their families and the NSRI are on alert to assist if they need to be evacuated for any reason.
