The City of Cape Town is actively continuing its distribution of home composting containers to residents of single residential properties. These containers bolster the City’s efforts to reduce the amount of food and organic waste that reach landfills.
Recently 300 containers were handed out during a Mayor’s Service Blitz event in the Kensington and Maitland communities.
Recipients received a hands-on demonstration on how to use their composting container, along with instructional materials to guide them through the composting process.
‘Composting is a key part of our strategy to reduce organic waste sent to landfill. It’s simple to do and produces nutrient-rich fertiliser that can help grow lush gardens or support local food growers who feed our communities.
‘When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces gases that contribute significantly more to global warming than composting does. Climate change threatens us all, so it’s in everyone’s interest to compost,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.
Since 2016 the City has distributed over 50 000 free home composting bins, helping to foster a strong composting culture. Demand remains high, reflecting growing enthusiasm among Capetonians to turn organic waste into valuable compost.
Rollout will continue at the Mayor’s next service blitz in Sub-council 11 on the 15 July 2025.
