Freshers' Braai welcomes new students

30 January 2010 by Alan

SRC membersWelcome home: SRC president Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh introduced his team members to the freshers.

Heavy south-easterly winds may have troubled many Capetonians on 28 January, but it didn’t deter thousands of first-year students from partying at UCT’s 2010 Fresher’s Braai.

Organised by the Student Orientation & Advocacy Centre, the braai is the main event to celebrate the arrival of new students and their entry into the world of higher education and university life.

The Students’ Representative Council president, Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, wowed the crowd when he dished up a hip hop performance to introduce his team. The White Collar Kiss band kept the freshers entertained throughout the evening, and acting vice-chancellor, Professor Danie Visser, welcomed the students and wished them luck and fun.

It seems the newcomers are indeed having fun on campus.

Muattham Carlie declared that “UCT rocks”, while his friend Carryn Gabriels added that the university has been the best experience of her life.

“I have met a lot of new friends, the campus is beautiful and the people are friendly and supportive,” she said.

Nandi Zulu from KwaZulu-Natal echoed Gabriels’ sentiments, adding that she has been made to feel at home and is settling in nicely. For Manuel Zweifel from Switzerland the downside was the slow registration process, otherwise his experience has lived up to all his expectations, he said.
