The Bellville library opened its doors for an exhilarating Waste-to-Art Exhibition end of November 2023. The city-funded event is the culmination of The Greater Tygerberg Partnership’s (GTP) exhilarating Climate Change School Holiday Programme which took place in October 2023.
The exhibition was a visual feast, showcasing the innovative creations and projects conceived by young participants during the weeklong holiday programme. Attendees were able to take in an array of up-cycled art pieces, captivating photographs captured during outdoor sessions, and eco-brick structures that reflect the students’ dedication to environmental stewardship.
What made this exhibition even more special is that all the art pieces and photographs created by the students will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going directly to the talented young creators, who are aged between 14 and 18. This initiative not only supports budding artists but also instils a sense of responsibility and ownership in the next generation of environmental advocates.
“This art exhibition served as a powerful platform for participants to showcase their creative endeavours in the realm of climate change. It underscores the intersection of art and environmental activism, encouraging a sense of expression and awareness among both participants and the broader community,” comments Monique Muller, Project Manager at GTP.
Creating future eco-warriors
Approximately 20 students from the Greater Tygerberg area participated in the immersive five-day Climate Change School Holiday Programme. The adventure included nature excursions to SANParks Silvermine Dam, up-cycling art sessions by OUR WORKSHOP, eco-brick structure building with Waste-ED, captivating outdoor photography sessions, and a thrilling guided snorkelling experience with Cape Town FreeDiving.
Muller expressed her pride in the programme’s success, stating, “The Climate Change School Holiday Programme goes beyond education; it’s a transformative journey empowering young minds to be stewards of our environment. We are proud of the creativity, passion, and dedication shown by each participant.”
The City-funded holiday programme, valued at R93,000, was made possible through collaboration with esteemed partners, including The City of Cape Town Arts and Culture Department, Waste-ED, SANParks, Freediving, ORMS, Nude Foods, and OUR WORKSHOP. Representatives from the collaborating partners were in attendance to further emphasising the collective commitment to fostering creativity and environmental awareness.
