As part of the final weekend of the South African Ocean Festival, presented by SAMSA and Calulo, the premier GAC Laser 2015 National Championships will be held at the V & A Waterfront from 6 – 8 November. Spectators will have the opportunity to mingle with sailors and experience the festive atmosphere on the quayside during the regatta.
The GAC Laser National Championships will start at Quay 6, where the Clipper Round the World Race yachts were moored on their stopover at the Waterfront. The GAC Laser National Championships forms part of the newly established Cape Summer Yacht Racing Circuit, incorporating all the top regattas hosted around the Cape Peninsula Peninsula; these include the Intasure Spring Regatta, IRC Nationals, RCYC’s Summer regatta, RCYC’s Mid-Summer Fling regatta and then finishing off with the ever popular Club Mykonos Offshore.
Spectators can expect the likes of Reichel Pugh 52 “Cape Fling” featuring Olympian sailor, Peter Holmberg and five times Volvo Ocean Race veteran and four times Americas Cup sailor, Jan Dekker to be part of the regatta. Previously campaigned boats will be back in the mix this year, with the return of Bally Hoo Too a modified Mum 36 skippered by world renowned single handed sailor JJ Provoyeur.
The bulk of the regatta will be made up of an array of competitive smaller boats such as Dale Kushner’s Sunfast 3200 Xtra-Link YOLO, the ever improving J111’s Mwah and Tenacity and the L34 “Nuthur Witch” which is showing signs of being a real threat for the podium.
Back to defend their 2014 titles will be the GP42 “Vulcan” winner of IRC 0, “A-L” the Farr 38 IRC 1 and the J105 “Pants on Fire” which took IRC 2.
Visitors can head down to V & A Waterfront Quay 6 & Jetty 2 to experience the quayside festivities during the regatta from Friday – Sunday between 8am – 9am and then from 4pm onwards.
