Golden Icons: Discover the World’s Top 1oz Gold Coins

13 November 2024 by Con Tributor

Johannesburg, November, 13, 2024: Gold coins are prized for their intrinsic value and artistry. Introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand was revolutionary—it became the first gold coin available to everyday buyers and paved the way for accessible gold ownership worldwide. According to Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange and Scoin Shop, “The Krugerrand created a new marketplace for gold, making ownership more accessible. It also inspired other nations to copy South Africa and create iconic coins.”

Since its debut in 1979, the Canadian Maple Leaf has sold over 25 million units. Created by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is known for its stunningly detailed maple leaf design. It boasts a 99.99% purity, the highest among bullion coins.

The People’s Bank of China launched the Chinese Panda in 1982. Unique for its yearly design change, this coin features China’s beloved giant panda. This collectable has gained popularity internationally, often selling over 1 million units yearly.

The United States Mint followed suit with the launch of the American Gold Eagle ( 1986). Its iconic design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens features Lady Liberty, symbolising freedom and resilience. With annual sales often surpassing 1 million units, this high volume underscores the coin’s popularity and widespread appeal.

Celebrating Britain’s heritage, the Britannia ( 1987) showcases an image of the national symbol, Britannia, set against a textured background for added security. The coin’s purity increased to 99.99% in 2013, enhancing its appeal to investors and collectors alike.

Over 50 million ounces of Krugerrands have been sold worldwide—more than any other bullion coin.  Its iconic design—Paul Kruger’s profile and a springbok—makes it an enduring symbol of value and South African pride. “South Africans have a keen understanding of the value of gold. People recognise that gold is not just a commodity; it is a reliable store of value that transcends economic cycles,” adds Demby.
