Govan Mbeki Road Upgrades

17 September 2026 by Con Tributor

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is pleased to confirm that major rehabilitation work is about to commence along Govan Mbeki Road (M9) that will ensure improved road conditions and general road safety, as well as improved stormwater drainage to reduce the risk of flooding, new streetlights, and upgraded traffic signal systems to assist with traffic flow. This work is related to the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service to connect commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg and Claremont.

The rehabilitation work will take place along Govan Mbeki Road from just east of the intersection with Klipfontein Road to just south of the R300 bridge. This section covers approximately 2,16km and forms part of the construction roll-out for the MyCiTi bus service in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

Work is about to commence, and if all goes as planned, should be complete before the end of 2028.

‘We are extremely excited that the work is about to recommence along this section of Govan Mbeki Road. The previous contract had to be suspended due to non-performance, but now we are back on track. The project includes major upgrades to the road and stormwater infrastructure, as well as the installation of new streetlights and traffic signal upgrades,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

There will also be employment opportunities available to those living in the impacted wards, and the City encourages jobseekers to register on their local Subcouncil database, and if they are already registered, to ensure their details are up to date.

Project detail:

  • The lanes along this section of Govan Mbeki Road will be reconstructed and rehabilitated; the pavements reconstructed and resurfaced, including new kerbing and road marking
  • The intersections will be upgraded as well to improve traffic flow
  • All pedestrian crossings and sidewalks will be upgraded; and tactile paving installed for universal access; new fencing and guardrails will be installed to improve safety
  • All of the stormwater drainage infrastructure – pipes, manholes, catchpits – will be upgraded and extended
  • New streetlights will be installed
  • Traffic signals will be upgraded at key intersections

‘Our residents can expect long-term benefits from the upgrade. Apart from improved road quality and travel conditions, this corridor will be a lot safer for motorists, pedestrians, and public transport users. With the upgrade to the stormwater infrastructure, commuters can anticipate that most of the flood risk will be mitigated, and the new streetlights will also assist with improving safety and security, in particular for those who are walking or travelling after sunset. We want to thank the local community in advance for their support while we get the work done to keep Capetonians moving,’ said Councillor Quintas.

Jobseekers

The City wants to remind jobseekers to please register on the local subcouncil jobseeker database. Bring your South African ID and proof of address to register.

If your name is on the City’s jobseeker database, you could be considered for temporary job opportunities at MyCiTi construction projects in your ward

  • The City will provide the project contractor with a random selection of registered candidates from the local jobseekers database
  • If selected, you will receive a text message. You must confirm your interest within 24 hours.

‘I encourage jobseekers to follow this process as opportunities will become available as this project progresses over the next few months,’ said Councillor Quintas.
