On Youth Day, we remember the tremendous impact young people’s voices had on shaping a new South Africa that promised freedom, equality and opportunity.
It is, however, terribly sad that in almost thirty years since the dawn of the new South Africa, not much has changed for our youth. Currently, almost six million young people are unemployed, which means that almost one in every two young people in the labour force does not have a job.
We expect that the National Government will tell the same old stories and make the same old promises tomorrow as they have been making for the last 28 years. And nothing will change.
We invite the ANC to come to DA-led governments, to see how things get done.
• The Western Cape is the best-run province and home to thirteen of the twenty top-performing municipalities in South Africa, including the City of Cape Town.
• The Western Cape Red tape reduction unit has been the forerunner in the country when it comes to making it easier for small business owners to do business.
• DA Western Cape has the lowest Unemployment rate.
• The Auditor-General’s latest report yet again shows that the DA-led Western Cape continues to outperform the remainder of the country.
The DA-run Western Cape also doesn’t have a board of high-paid political appointments to create youth jobs and opportunities, we just do what needs to be done. We also do not practice cadre deployment, and therefore give talented and skilled graduates the opportunity to enter public service.
This year, we ask the ANC to spare us the empty rhetoric. Young South Africans are sick and tired of empty words and hollow promises. If the ANC government wants to meaningfully honour the memory of those young people who died for our freedom, they must stop talking and create real job opportunities for young people.
