MyPR: GRAND GOLD FOR LONGRIDGE’S GREAT LADY:
Jasper Raats and young Emily Hobhouse, direct descendant of the Anglo-Boer war activist.
The Emily, a tribute wine crafted by Longridge cellar master Jasper Raats, received a Gran d‘Or or double gold medal at the recently held Michelangelo Wine and Spirits Awards.
Currently in its twentieth year, the prestigious competition is judged by a panel of acclaimed wine experts from around the globe. All judges are hand-picked and serve on the panel by invitation only.
The Emily is an elegant blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a slight blush and was dedicated to the Anglo-Boer War activist Emily Hobhouse, who became world-renowned for drawing attention to the plight of South Africans, especially women and children, incarcerated in the concentration camps during the war. Since its release in 2015, The Emily has received numerous awards and accolades, including gold medals at the Veritas Awards and the CWA Gold Wine Awards.
Raats holds The Emily in great esteem due to the unforgettable legacy of Emily Hobhouse and with this sentiment in mind, he launched the maiden vintage at the War Memorial in Bloemfontein, which is also the final resting place of Emily Hobhouse.
“This wine was quite a departure from my usual winemaking style, but I wanted to create something exquisite in memory of Emily and all the other courageous women from the past and the present, who have made enormous sacrifices in pursuit of justice and equality. It is great to see this wine also receiving critical acclaim,” mentions Raats.
The wine is a blend of predominantly unwooded Chardonnay with a small amount of lightly wooded Pinot Noir from the Elgin region. Raats described The Emily as a fresh wine with a lovely hue, bursting with aromas of ripe guava, pineapple, kiwi, green apple and a hint of strawberry, ending with a well-balanced acidity and a lingering finish. Perfect for summer sipping.
