Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, welcomes enforcement reports from the Western Cape Liquor Authority (WCLA) over the past seven days.
Last week, the WCLA conducted 320 inspections, as well as 112 inspections focused on underage drinking. There were also six operations conducted with SAPS and other law enforcement agencies. 38 compliance notices were issued to license holders, and 14 non-compliance cases have been submitted for prosecution.
Inspections were conducted in a total of 31 different areas, including Gordons Bay, Table View, Constantia, Philippi, Newlands, Delft and more. Integrated operations between the WCLA and SAPS and other law enforcement agencies were conducted in Gugulethu, Kraaifontein, Manenberg, Mitchells Plain, Ocean View, Atlantis and Malmesbury.
Minister Fritz said, “I want to thank the Western Cape Liquor Authority and all other law enforcement agencies, including LEAP Officers, for their tireless work in ensuring that alcohol regulations are adhered to. We know that alcohol harms present a huge strain on our health system, and that it is a significant social ill. While we do acknowledge the importance of prevention and rehabilitation initiatives, law enforcement is nevertheless crucially important. And so we want to thank the Liquor Authority and the law enforcement agencies for the role that they play.”
Minister Fritz continued, “I would like to ask everyone to be mindful of the dangers associated with excessive alcohol consumption on Heritage Day today and the long weekend on the whole. The Western Cape Liquor Authority and other law enforcement agencies are preparing to conduct operations and respond to complaints. Please enjoy yourselves responsibly.”
