Hawks net 19th suspect linked to stolen vehicle syndicate

14 July 2021 by CapeTownNewsReader

WESTERN CAPE – The Hawks’ team based in Cape Town arrested a 31- year-old suspect during a project driven investigation in Gauteng today.

The suspect who is reported to be an outstanding suspect on the investigation, was arrested on a search warrant. The latest suspect arrested today, now becomes the 19th accused and will appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 14 July 2021.

This follows an in-depth investigation by the Hawks team which resulted in arresting a syndicate that relates to theft of Polo vehicles that operated in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

During the first leg of the investigation eight syndicate members including their ring leaders were dealt a major blow when they were arrested during February this year consecutively between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Subsequently nine suspects were nabbed during the second leg of investigation from three different vehicle licensing departments. Further investigation revealed that these employees from the Department of Transport allegedly aided the syndicate in ensuring that the stolen vehicles were re-registered.

The eighteenth suspect, a girlfriend to the Gauteng based ring leader was arrested on Wednesday, 16 June 2021 for her alleged involvement in the syndicate.
