Hobie Cat Rescue

9 January 2009 by CapeTownNewsReader

At 09h37 on Thursday the 8th of January NSRI Stillbaai responded to Blombos, 21 nautical miles West of Stillbaai, aboard their rescue craft Spirit of St Francis and an NSRI rescue vehicle dispatched to reports of a capsized skeevy boat with 3 men on-board.

Enrico Menezies, NSRI Stillbaai station commander, said that on arrival on-scene it was determined that all 3 men, from Cape Town, were safe and had righted their craft and had made it safely to shore and were not injured. No further asistance was required.

At 12h12 on Wednesday NSRI Witsand responded to reports of a red distress flare, sighted by members of the public, set off by 3 people on a de-masted hobie-cat in the Estuary Mouth.

Angus Kirkman, NSRI Witsand station commander, said that the NSRI Witsand volunteers launched Falcon Rescuer and on arrival on-scene assisted a father, his son and daughter and brought them to the NSRI rescue base where the 10 year old son was assessed for a head injury sustained after the boom of the hobie-cat had de-masted and had hit him on the head.

The 10 year old male was taken to a doctor in Heidelberg and was released later in a satisfactory condition.

The 14 year old female and their 50 year old father were not injured and the hobie-cat was recovered.
