How to Choose the Best Rugs for the Home and Office

22 January 2021 by Con Tributor

Pretoria, January, 21 2020: Many people who start the process of selecting the right rug, find that they must consider many things – the colour and shape of the rug, the area in which it will be placed, current floor covering, etc. hardwood floors, tile floors.

Will the rug be placed on a wooden floor? If so, you should be able to conform to the usual rug selection guidelines.

When you want to decorate the dining room with a rug, make sure that the rug you select fits neatly beneath the legs of the chairs and table. This way the feet of the furniture won’t do any serious harm to the flooring. Round rugs are generally used for dining room use, but that is not a hard and fast rule. If you have a large, rectangular dining room table, it can be best to choose a rug of the same shape, but slightly bigger.

If you are looking for a rug for your living room, you should first make sure that the size you opt for is big enough to fit under the front legs of the furniture. If you choose a rug that is too small, the room will look off balance and the opposite is also true – if the rug is too big, it can end up dominating the living room.

The bedroom lends itself to numerous ways that you can place a rug so the size that you go for will complement your bedroom décor and layout. Generally, the most popular placement for rugs in a bedroom is next to the bed, on either side of the bed (if the bed is in the centre of the room), at the head of the bed, just beneath the top legs and the bedside tables; or at the foot of the bed. If you are lucky enough to have a big bedroom, you could also opt for a rounded rug in the centre of the room – it will give the space that extra something.

When making a rug selection there is one very important thing that you must keep in mind, and that is the slip factor. Rugs have a reputation for being slippery, regardless of the type of floor they are placed on. Hardwood floors are especially slippery and it is not unusual, especially in the case of smaller rugs, to notice that the rug doesn’t stay in one place for very long. It is for this reason that money people choose to use a rug pad, which presents a few problems of its own. A Rug pad basically provide a certain amount of stick, it prevents the rug from moving around and possibly causing an accident. But beware, not all rug pads are made the same.

Buying a decent rug can be a costly investment. If you are buying something that you would like to use for many years, buying the right type of rug for the intended space should not be limited to choosing the cheapest on the market. After all, all that cheapness will quickly make a ugly and embarrassing show on your rug when it starts to fray or looses its flair.

Placing a rug for a wooden floor is certainly not rocket science but you might find that the most difficult part of the process comes down to buying a rug that best suits the floor, the particular space as well as your taste.

Some more tips to help you choose the best rugs

It sounds elementary, but always make sure that the rug you are buying will fit the room you are adding it to. The size of the rug should never be too big or too small for the place in which you are laying it.  The design and colour of the rug should always complement the space.

Remember that the design and colour of the rug, combined with the flooring should be used to create harmony. You should take the flooring into consideration, but you should also think about the furniture you have in the room and the wall décor.

With wooden floors, depending on the depth of the brown hues, you can go either dark or light with your rug. If your flooring boasts a texture of its own It might be a good idea to keep patterns and textures to a minimum. The last thing you want is for your rug to clash with your floor!

If you have dark wooden floors, go with colours like beige, white, light blues, pastels, light blues, even bright reds, grey or yellow. Should your wooden floors be a lighter brown, you can opt for burgundies and reds, mossy greens, browns, light orange, and any of the more earthy tones.

Wooden flooring can differ in various spaces throughout the home, and our advice is to take extra care when making your decision. It is a good idea to study the pattern of the wood.

Finally, quality should always be uppermost in your mind when it comes to rugs.  Any rug that you choose, you buy with the expectation that it will stay in a great condition for a very long time. The only way that this can be achieved is if you take the extra effort to seek out the kind of rug that is made from durable materials and able to handle years of use without being overly damaged. Even the most durable fibres will be taking a beating with heavy traffic. Be sure to brush up on the various cleaning and maintenance techniques that you can use to help ensure the long lifespan of your rug.
