Hundreds celebrate at June graduations

11 June 2011 by Alan

June graduates salute parents, guardians and those who supported themThat’s all, folks: June graduates salute parents, guardians and those who supported them.

UCT’s June graduation ceremonies wrap up today, with the Friday afternoon session devoted to the graduands of the Graduate School of Business.

But already the lion’s share of nearly 1 400 graduands scheduled to file through Jameson Hall over the two days have celebrated the ceremonial completion of a diploma or degree. (And can now officially be called graduates.) They included most of the 63 doctoral graduates to be capped at the ceremonies.

The graduation ceremony this morning was particularly auspicious as UCT presented honorary degrees to education legend Stella Petersen and, no less of a UCT legend, former deputy vice-chancellor Emeritus Professor Martin West. Petersen received an honorary doctorate in education, and West an honorary doctorate in literature.

Download the honorary doctorate citation for Stella Petersen and Martin West.
