MyPR: Interwaste receives prestigious accolades at CAIA 2019 Responsible Care® Awards:

Interwaste, a leading integrated waste management company, is honoured to have received both first and second place awards respectively at this year’s Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association (CAIA) Responsible Care® Awards.

Interwaste scooped first place for their Teach South Africa (SA) project, undertaken by their subsidiary Masakhane Interwaste (Pty) Ltd. The project is aimed at providing additional support in Mathematics, Science and languages of learner performance to the students of KP Toto Technical and Commercial school in Batharos, Northern Cape. High performing Teach SA university student ambassadors were placed at the school to facilitate this and the results were incredible. More than double the number of students passed their matric exams with the school witnessing a 93% pass rate in 2018, following 2017’s average of 43% – a 116% improvement in one year!

“We are extremely proud to have won the Responsible Care® Initiative Award as it affirms and demonstrates our mission at Interwaste – to support and grow the communities in which we operate by identifying initiatives that aim to uplift them socio-economically and contribute towards education,” says Jason McNeil, Chief Executive Officer at Interwaste. “In the Northern Cape, this vision was realised when we partnered with TEACH SA, a non-profit organisation fully endorsed by the South African Department of Basic Education (DBE), to ensure we promote the fact that education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Further to this, the company’s SHEQ department was nominated as the runner up for the Responsible Care Award as a result of its ability to improve Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) performance substantially. Through investing in, and implementing, a paperless ‘cloud based’ HSE management system, the company was able to create a more streamlined internal auditing process – allowing for management involvement as well as for ad-hoc actions. With a strong focus on the CHECK component of the well-known PLAN, DO, CHECK, ACT model, the company also ensured that they placed a strong focus on altering organisational culture to a more people/eco-centric approach – where training was focused on mid-top level management.

“These initiatives have had a significant impact in bolstering HSE performance, and we are very proud to not only receive this award, but to recognise the lowering of key performance indicators in this regard including: Lost Time Frequency Rate and environmental incidents,” continues McNeil.
