Leave the Ants Alone, Says Gqeberha Pest Controller

2 November 2026 by CapeTownNewsReader

Gqeberha, October 31, 2026 – Ants in a garden do not automatically mean a home needs pest treatment. True Clean owner Diederik Visser favours treating an actual problem and leaving outdoor ants alone when they are not bothering the household.

The distinction matters as residents decide what to do about activity around their homes. Ants moving outdoors, ants reaching food inside and a substantial problem around paving are different situations. The sight of a few insects is not enough to decide that every area needs spraying.

In his account of how he approaches ant work, Visser puts the decision plainly: “If you’ve got ants outside and they’re not bothering you, leave them.”

His preference is to assess the activity before recommending treatment. Where are the ants being seen? Are they entering the house? Is food being reached in several rooms? Is the main concern outside? Those details help establish whether there is a problem to treat and where the inspection should start.

For a resident, describing the effect is more useful than asking for the whole property to be sprayed. A photograph of a trail and an explanation of where it leads can help with the initial enquiry. An inspection may still be needed to establish the source and appropriate response.

Visser also avoids promising that household prevention will keep every ant away. Sealing accessible entry points, keeping food covered and dealing with conditions around the building can form part of looking after the property. They do not justify a guarantee that ants will never return.

Some households choose planned treatment visits. True Clean discusses that option according to the property and the problem rather than presenting a fixed spray schedule as necessary for every garden.

The starting question is whether the activity is causing a problem. When it is, the treatment should follow the findings. When it is not, leaving it alone can be the appropriate advice.
