Budget expedited with success
Today, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament voted to adopt the province’s budget. In a display of unity, all political parties agreed to vastly reduce the time required for the legislature to complete its business, which was originally scheduled to finish tomorrow.
Chief Whip, MPP Mireille Wenger says: “I applaud the efforts of all political parties, the Executive, and the Speaker in working together today. We not only set aside our political differences in the interest of service delivery, but also demonstrated an example of social distancing by keeping minimal numbers in the house”.
At the time of passing the budget, we implemented a reduced proportional number of only 28 Members of the Legislature. This provided the necessary quorum and allowed members to have ample physical distance between each other in an effort to do our part for social distancing.
MPP Mireille Wenger adds: “We are playing our part to stop the spread of the corona virus and comply with international safety standards at this time”.
In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, good governance in the Western Cape can continue with the passing of this significant, pro-poor budget.
