Local Cape Town Ward 109 councillor, Peter Helfrich, praised local heroes for rescuing a family and their little baby from a burning house on the morning of Thursday, 2 December 2021 in Macassar. He thanked them for their bravery and for risking their own lives in order to assist their fellow community members.
“I would like to make use of this opportunity to honour and thank the brave and selfless individuals who risked their lives this morning to help extinguish a fire and also helped to evacuate a family from a burning house.” – Councillor Peter Helfrich
According to eyewitnesses eleven teachers and staff of the False Bay Primary School and various community members rushed towards a burning house this morning to help extinguish a fire. The teachers and staff managed to grab 14 fire extinguishers from the school and assisted by controlling the fire while waiting for the City of Cape Town Fire Services (fire services) to arrive. Neighbours also jumped in and made use of a garden house in an attempt to douse the fire. The teachers, staff and community members who all assisted managed to enter the building and evacuate a family and their little baby from the burning house.
“I would like to thank the fire services and the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management for their speedy response to this incident, but even more so, I thank each and every staff member, teacher and member of the community who risked their lives this morning to help keep this fire under control and evacuate the family from the burning home. You do not see the type of bravery and selflessness that was displayed at this scene every day. I have so much respect for each and every one of you. You make me proud to be a member of this community.” – Councillor Peter Helfrich
