Loyiso Bala in Cape Town

Loyiso Bala
Loyiso Bala

Fans of talented South African singer and songwriter Loyiso Bala can experience his incredible vocal range up close in an intimate, acoustic performance at the V&A Waterfront’s Chavonnes Battery Museum in the Silo District on Wednesday, 29 June.

The popular R&B artist’s voice was honed by classical training received at the prestigious Drakensburg Boys Choir, and at age 19 he was appointed as the youngest conductor of the National Youth Choir.

During the course of his career, Loyiso has shared a stage with musical greats such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Brian McKnight, Elton John, Will Smith and Akon. He also performed alongside Alicia Keys, Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas and John Legend before the opening match of the 2010 FIFA world Soccer Cup.

In July 2008, Bala performed before a 46,000 strong crowd at a 46664 concert held in Hyde Park, London, which he followed up with a performance at the world-famous Radio City Hall in New York on 18 July 2009 to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday.

Among the other memorable audiences he has performed for are Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton and one time British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

Talent clearly runs in the Bala family, and Loyiso is one third of the ‘Bala Brothers’ a group which includes his two equally talented brothers. Warner Brothers Records in the USA recently recorded and released their self-titled album, which was broadcasted to 80% of American audiences, and debuted at number eight on the Billboard Charts.

Since embarking on his solo career, Bala has won multiple music awards, including five South African Music Awards (SAMAs), three Metro FM Awards and a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for the best musical score. He also produced and co-wrote Idols Season VI runner up Lloyd Cele’s debut album ‘One’, which went on to win Lloyd his first SAMA in the Best Pop Album category. It also gave Loyiso his first SAMA Nomination for Best Producer in 2012.

As a committed Christian, Loyiso also hosts a television programme ‘Called to worship’ and a weekly Christian radio programme ‘The open book’ on CliffCentral online radio station.

Supporting Loyiso in the opening act will be Eden Myrrh, a contestant on the first season of The Voice.

The performance is limited to 200 guests, and a cash bar will be available on the evening. Doors open at 7pm, and performances are scheduled to start at 7.30pm. Tickets are available to purchase from Quicket at a cost of R175 per person. Convenient parking is available in the Silo District underground parking.
