Major roadworks along Oliver Tambo Drive

14 October 2026 by Con Tributor

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas went out to Samora Machel this week where the City is making important progress with the rehabilitation of Oliver Tambo Drive between Jakes Gerwel Drive and Elland Road.

‘Our teams are currently busy with Phase 1 of the project, which stretches along Oliver Tambo Drive from Jakes Gerwel Drive to Lillian Ngoyi Street. A major focus of this project is improving stormwater drainage along this key road. We are installing new underground drainage pipes, followed by new and improved manholes and catchpits, to better manage stormwater and protect the road infrastructure. We’ll also be resurfacing this section of road with a more durable asphalt layer, repairing sidewalks and side drains, and repainting road markings. We’re committed to maintaining and improving Cape Town’s road network for all communities, making our roads safer, more durable, and more reliable in order to keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

If all goes according to plan, Phase 1 of the project remains on track for completion by the end of the year and the remaining section, from Lillian Ngoyi Street to Elland Road, is planned to commence early in 2027.
