Carmen Long, NSRI Hout Bay deputy station commander, said: At 16h11, Tuesday, 24 March, NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) alerted WC Government Health EMS Metro Control following a request for assistance from friends of a man reporting him to be hiking on a trail in the vicinity of the BOS 400 ship wreck – it appeared that he had lost his way and was appealing for assistance.
In communications with EMS Metro Control it was determined that the man may be suffering dehydration and while he was instructed to remain in place, on rocks near to the BOS 400 ship wreck, a coordinated response was investigated with Metro EMS rescue paramedics, EMS Metro Control, NSRI EOC and NSRI Hout Bay duty controllers.
While Metro EMS rescue paramedics remained on high alert our NSRI Hout Bay duty crew responded to our NSRI Hout Bay station 8 rescue base where we launched the NSRI rescue craft Albie Matthews.
NSRI Bakoven were placed on alert.
On arrival on the scene the adult man, from Durban, was located on rocks near to the BOS 400 ship wreck, and he was taken safely onboard our rescue craft without incident.
The man was medically treated for dehydration and he was brought to our NSRI rescue base where following medical treatment he required no further assistance.
The man, and his friends, are commended for raising the alarm.
The operation completed at 18h26.
