Match Report: SA A (17) vs British and Irish Lions (13)

Playing in 10 Degrees Celsius in Cape Town South Africa on Wednesday Evening 14 July 2021, the SA ‘A’ side (Springboks) started off on the good foot of a Morne Steyn penalty after 6 minutes of play against the touring British & Irish Lions.

The penalty came after a denied try from winger, Sbu Nkosi.

At the 12 minute mark a kick from Owen Farrell was charged down by Etsebeth, picked up by de Allende who off loaded to Nkosi to speed away and score. Steyn slotted the 3 points putting the SA side on 10-0

The Lions clawed back some dignity after 27 minutes when Owen Farrell slotted a penalty to put the Lions on the scoreboard.

With less than eight minutes to go before half-time it went to 17-3 to South Africa ‘A’ with Lukhanyo Am over after a great run by Cheslin Kolbe who ghosted between Chris Harris and Rees-Zammit before passing to captain Lukhanyo Am, who ran in unopposed. Steyn slotted the conversion and put the SA side in a comfortable 17-3 lead. No wonder that Ronan O’Gara called Kolbe the Lionel Messi of rugby.

Undettered the Lions pushed back but just couldn’t complete.

After two Yellow Cards – Faf De Klerk and Marco van Staden – and with only 13 men on the field the reply from the Lions was swift with Welsh prop Wyn Jones celebrating a try. BUT the TMO was called to confirm/deny. TMO Marius Jonker ruled that Jones was short and then propelled himself forward illegally.

With two minutes to go to the halfway mark SA ‘A’ had conceded 11 penalties and the Lions 5.

Exiting the first half the SA ‘A’ side faced a restart with 13 men after a Faf De Klerk and Marco van Staden Yellow Card ‘spree’.

The first half stats on paper should have put the Lions ahead with 63% of the possession and territory, 56 v 28 Carries, 4 v 10 Tackles missed and 5 v 1 penalties conceded.

SA ‘A’ returned to the second half with 13 men and 17 points in hand against 3 points for the Lions. The first 9 minutes of the second half promised to be interesting.

At the restart Kolbe stood in for De Klerk at scrumhalf.

With pressure piling on the SA side by the Lions we saw Rynhardt Elstadt come on for Pieter-Steph du Toit, who went off for a head injury assessment (HIA). Vincent Koch also on for SA ‘A’.

The pressure paid off as the Lions scored and converted to take the score to 17-10 off of a Wyn Jones try and Farrell conversion.

Shortly thereafter Wyn Jones went off with a shoulder injury and replaced by Mako Vunipola.

Immense pressure from the Lions sees the SA side scrambling and defending with vigour.

At the 60 minute mark the run of play went to 13 phases before Lions Rees-Zammitt attempted a touch down in the corner which was referred to the TMO for a decision after a “no try” call on the field. Replays show Rees-Zammit’s first grounding was short – and the TMO said there was no conclusive evidence he scored at his second attempt. He then tried again and was penalised for a double movement.

A missed penalty from a lineout infringement by Itoje saw the attempt by Steyn pulled to the left.

With 13 minutes left SA ‘A’ had a rare attacking opportunity in the Lions 22m area. It was now or never for the home side to get some points, before running out of steam in the final 10 minutes. The Lions illegally entered a maul giving Steyn a chance to set up a lineout 5 metres out. SA were going for at least 4 points to make life uncomfortable for the Lions but were thwarted by the Lions winning a turnover.

Less than 5 minutes later SA ‘A’ won another penalty just inside their own half and Steyn set up another attacking lineout. Clean ball and Steyn attempted a drop which swung to the left, again.

4 minutes to go and the Lions were not giving up as Rees-Zammit booted a ball from Farrell into touch putting SA ‘a’ into possession but in their own half.

A welcome penalty for South Africa sets them up once again for a lineout in Lions territory as they sought to put a final nail in the coffin. Once again the Lions won a turnover at the maul and attacked from deep. A good move from the Lions caught the SA off-side and set up a lineout in the SA ‘A’ 22 meter area. Not to be as the Lions knock on.

At the final whistle SA ‘A emerged victorious with 17 points to the British and Irish Lions 13 points.

5 Minutes: After a concerted period of attack, winger Sbu Nkosi goes over in the corner for SA ‘A’. The decision is referred upstairs but replays show Nkosi had put a foot out. There was, however, advantage and the hosts were awarded a penalty close to the uprights.

6 Minutes: Morne Steyn slots Penalty. 3-0

12 Minutes: Try from Sbu Nkosi and conversion by Morne Steyn.

15 Minutes: Lions Fullback Liam Williams injured and off the field for an HIA assessment. Elliot Daly on and then for remainder of the game as Williams failed the assessment.

27 Minutes: Owen Farrell slots the easy PENALTY to out the Lions on the board. 10-3

31 Minutes: Try for the SA ‘A’ skipper, Lukhanyo Am. Converted by Steyn. 17-3.

38 Minutes: SA ‘A’ substitution – Malcolm Marx replaced Joseph Dweba at hooker.

38 Minutes: The South Africa ‘A’ scrum-half Faf de Klerk receives a yellow card for a shoulder charge with no clear wrapping of the arms.

39 Minutes: Yellow card for Marco van Staden after South Africa ‘A’ give away multiple penalties on their own try line.

44 Minutes: TRY for Wyn Jones as the SA ‘A’ wall finally buckles. Farrell slots the easy CONVERSION. SA ‘A’ 17-10 Lions

46 Minutes: Mako Vunipola on for Wyn Jones.

47 Minutes: Sam Simmonds comes onto replace Taulupe Faleutau at number 8.

48 Minutes: Faf De Klerk returns from the Sin Bin.

50 Minutes: Owen Farrell slots a penalty from the center of the pitch around 40m out and the SA ‘A’ side are in trouble 17-13

50 Minutes: Luke Cowan-Dickie comes on at hooker to replace Ken Owens.

52 Minutes – Van Staden back on the pitch and out of the Sin Bin.

53 Minutes: Damian de Allende is off for South Africa, replaced by Damian Willemse.

55 Minutes: Concern for SA ‘A’ as Willie le Roux is down with what looks like a right knee issue.
