Physicians are set to be updated on the latest development in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions as UCT’s Department of Medicine hosts its biennial Physicians Conference.

Using the event to celebrate its 90th anniversary, the department started with a special seminar at Groote Schuur Hospital on 17 February, where two of its former heads, Professors Stuart Saunders and Solomon Benatar, shared their insights about the history of the department, its contribution and what they see as the future for medicine in South Africa. A dinner was also held in Jameson Hall the following evening.

Professor Bongani Mayosi, head of the medicine department, said the conference has been running for 40 years, with some of the leading researchers presenting scientific advances in their fields. Among the “core conditions” to be addressed are TB, HIV, high blood pressure, diabetics and heart failure, Mayosi explained.

He said his department is one of the few comprehensive schools in the country that offer a full-spectrum of highly specialised services, such as surgery for epilepsy, transplants and cardiac resonate imaging.
