The persistence of the lawless taxi strike in Cape Town, now stretching into its sixth day, has left the city’s small business community reeling. The economic health of the sector, already fraught with financial challenges, is dealt yet another blow.
The sense of desperation and lawlessness by the taxi industry has escalated, yet the deafening silence from Small Business Development Minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, raises serious concerns about government’s commitment to addressing the crisis the sector is undergoing.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO)’s continued flagrant disregard for the rule of law and the welfare and safety of our small business community is not only a betrayal of the trust of thousands but an affront to our constitutional values.
The livelihood of thousands of business owners and employees are at risk as the taxi strike continues. These are the very individuals who stimulate the economy and put food on our tables. Yet, they are robbed of the opportunity to function, leading to devastating production losses, delays, and closures.
The necessity for safe and affordable transport to fuel our economy is not negotiable. Our businesses and working corps are the cogs that keep the South African economic engine running.
The violent actions perpetrated by the striking individuals are not only inexcusable but demand immediate intervention.
We call upon Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams to publicly condemn the violence and assure immediate assistance to the affected businesses. The onus now falls on the Minister and her Department, to act swiftly in supporting the businesses impacted by the taxi strike, ensuring immediate recovery and a restoration of the faith in our nation’s governance.
