Northlink College, a College situated in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, participated in the first inaugural WorldSkills South Africa competition at the Cape Town International Convention Centre during January 2015. The College students, as part of the Western Cape team, competed against other students from both private educational, public Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges, and even industry representatives during the competition.
From the 73 participants that battled it out on the competition floor, Northlink was privileged to have seven of its students placed in the top three of the skills that they competed in.
The students that have been placed in the top three from the College are:
- Mia Crous (Hairdressing)
- Michelle Samuels (Beauty Therapy)
- Brett Lodewyk (Cooking)
- Siyabonga Makathini (Plumbing and Heating)
- Dwayne Davids (CNC Turning)
- Tertius De Villiers (CNC Turning)
- Brandon Klaasen (CNC Turning)
The overall winner per skill will be announced in March 2015 as part of the WorldSkills SA team who will represent the country in Brazil in August this year.
Northlink College is also privileged to have in its midst, the National Skills Expert in Computer Numeric Control (CNC) Turning – Louis Carelse – who will be part of the delegation that will be going to Brazil later this year.

“This competition showed me that if you have determination and work hard, you will achieve your dreams,” said Brett Lodewyk, National Certificate (Vocational) Hospitality student and one of the WorldSkills SA top three finalists.
Having the most finalists nationally support Northlink’s mission to provide quality, relevant and accredited Education and Training which will address the Skills and Developmental needs of all stakeholders.
