Shane Kempen, NSRI Agulhas station commander, said: “At 08h00 on 30 May, 2010, NSRI Agulhas volunteers were activated to respond to rendezvous with the Chokka fishing boat Pietro-Leanja fishing off the “6 Mile Bank” and reporting one of their fishermen on-board to be ill and requiring evacuation to hospital.
The vessel was instructed to make its way into the Bay off Struis Baai harbour to rendezvous with our rescue craft.
The Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services were activated.
[ad#Google Adsense 125×125 Blog Post]We launched our rescue craft I & J Rescuer II and rendezvoused with the vessel in the Bay and the casualty, an Angolan fisherman aged in his early 30’s, was transferred aboard our rescue craft, treatment for dehydration was initiated, and he was brought ashore where we were met by a Metro ambulance and the patient has been transported to hospital by Metro in a stable condition.
The man’s illness was not identified (by NSRI medics) but it was reported by the ships Captain that he had not been eating well and was suffering progressive weakness and dehydration.”
