Okavango Road and Amadeus Drive Intersection Upgrades

13 October 2026 by Con Tributor

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise residents and all road users of roadworks along Okavango Road at the intersection of Okavango Road and Amadeus Drive. The work is planned to take place from tomorrow, 13 October 2026 until Friday, 14 May 2027 if all goes according to plan. Working hours will be between 07:00 and 17:30 from Monday to Friday, and between 07:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays.

The upgrade along Okavango Road (either side of the intersection with Amadeus Drive), forms part of a private developer’s contribution to the upgrade of infrastructure surrounding its development. This is to accommodate the increase in traffic generated by increased development in the Kraaifontein and Durbanville areas.

‘We welcome this intersection upgrade along Okavango Road. Residents can look forward to a wider intersection, which will alleviate traffic congestion in the future. The improved stormwater drainage here will also reduce the risk of road flooding. Congestion can be expected due to partial lane closures over the next few months; we therefore ask that road users please remain patient and use alternative routes while construction work is under way. We thank you for your understanding while we work on our infrastructure to keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The scope of the roadworks include:

  • Construction of dual roadways and provision of active mobility infrastructure
  • Upgrading of the associated stormwater pipe and channel system
  • Upgrading the current open-channel stormwater drainage system to a formal piped system with kerb inlets, connecting into the new stormwater pipe network installed at the Vatican Street intersection along Okavango Road
  • Modification of existing infrastructure affected by the intersection upgrades
  • Relocation, re-installation and upgrading of existing intersection signalisation
  • Relocation and re-installation of existing electrical cables at the intersection
  • Relocation and installation of new streetlights and cables
  • The reinstatement of all road markings to suit the new alignment.

Road users are to be cautious while work is under way, lower their speed and be vigilant in and around the roadworks area.
