This piece features the age-old technique of harmonic overtone singing, which has its roots in Hoomei (Tuvan) “throat” singing, indigenous to Western Mongolia, as well as the overtone chanting of Tantric Tibetan Buddhism.
Overtone singing allows the performer the unique opportunity to sing in two voices at once. Through singing a steady fundamental pitch in the lower register of the voice, and modulating the shape of the mouth cavity, one can reproduce a “second voice” which consists of high harmonic or overtones, creating silvery, ethereal melodies soaring high above.
