WESTERN CAPE – Sterling investigation by members attached to the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit has resulted in the arrest of four police officers for house robbery reported at Hout Bay SAPS for investigation.
On 14 September 2024 at about 01:35, a house robbery occurred at the premises of a foreign national in Sunset Avenue, Llandudno, allegedly involving several police officers. This case was reported at Hout Bay police and transferred to the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation.
Investigation by seasoned detectives led to the arrest of police members over a period of time.
A 44-year-old sergeant was arrested on 14 September 2024 at about 16:00 at 35 Squadron, Belhar, and at about 17:20, a 28-year-old constable was arrested at Gugulethu SAPS. Both appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates court on 17 September 2024, and the case was remanded to 23 September 2024. The case was then postponed to 03 October 2024 for bail application
Further investigations led to the arrest of a 33-year-old sergeant at Bellville SAPS on 19 September 2024 at 18:35. The member was detained at Wynberg SAPS, and he appeared at the Wynberg Magistrate court on 23 September 2024 with the other two accused arrested on 14 September 2024.
This morning (Wednesday, 02 October 2024) at about 06:35, Anti-Corruption Unit members arrested a 38-year-old sergeant at Philippi SAPS after the member was linked through fingerprints found at the crime scene. The member was detained at Wynberg SAPS police cells, and he is due to appear at Wynberg Magistrate Court on 03 October 2024 with the other three members arrested earlier.
Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile has praised the investigation team for the arrests. He says that police officers are supposed to uphold the law and protect the public. “Let this serve as a warning to those who think they can abuse the resources of the state for their disgraceful purposes”. he said.
