The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape has welcomed a commitment made today by Premier Alan Winde to establish a provincial disaster donations depot during his reply to the State of the Province Address (SOPA) debate.
The DA’s proposal of a provincial depot, raised during my SOPA debate speech this week, could serve as a collection point where residents of the Western Cape can donate food, clothing, and supplies for management and distribution by the Provincial Government in the wake of disasters such as floods, fires, or freak seasonal storms.
I welcome this commitment by Premier Winde as a means to unite our province through the spirit of community and the shared desire to help fellow residents in need.
Our province’s resilience and sense of community has prevailed in getting us through serious disasters in the past, such as the worst drought in over 100 years, numerous fires, and flooding. The provincial donations depot will assist in enhancing our shared sense of generosity and consideration for our neighbours.
The proposal of a provincial disaster donations depot includes allocating a provincial state-owned building to house the depot and we will be monitoring the progress made by the Provincial Government on Premier Winde’s commitment today, through the Standing Committees on Local Government and Transport & Public Works, respectively.
The depot will create a means for the residents of the Western Cape to give back to their communities in a constructive way, ensuring that nobody is left behind.
