Preservation of Ashton canning plant jobs welcome

13 July 2022 by Alan

Dear Editor

The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the agreement reached by Tiger Brands, affected employees, organised labour, and other stakeholders to keep the Tiger Brands’ Langeberg & Ashton Foods (L&AF) canning plant open for another year.

With jobs being as scarce as they are in our struggling economy, this agreement provides a lifeline for 250 permanent employees and 4 300 seasonal workers.

The agreement also paves the way for a more permanent solution through the sale of the plant, with interested parties now having more time to put together the necessary capital.

MPP Gillion Bosman says: “Our country is facing widespread economic hardship which means that we cannot afford to lose any existing jobs. The agreement to keep the Ashton canning factory open should be seen as a huge victory for workers, who now have economic stability for another year. The DA sees jobs as a source of dignity, and hope that a permanent solution to keep the factory open, and secure the jobs of workers, can be found in the next year.”

Regards
