Public dialogue with Albie Sachs

30 July 2015 by Alan

Cape Town – Judge Albie Sachs and the daughter of a man who died at the hands of Eugene de Kock will be taking part in a series of public dialogues on trauma, memory and representations of South Africa’s apartheid past.

The first of six events will be held in Cape Town on Thursday.

Candice Mama was eight years old when her father was killed by De Kock, the Apartheid-era killer.

After visiting De Kock in jail with her mother and siblings, Mama issued a public statement supporting his parole application.

The dialogue will be held by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) under the theme ‘Intergenerational dialogue on trauma and healing’.

Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, a senior research professor in trauma, memory and forgiveness at the University of the Free State, said the aim of the dialogue series was to put a spotlight on the trauma that many South Africans experienced as a result of the country’s apartheid past.

It was also aimed at analysing the various strategies individuals and communities had used to heal.

The dialogues are part of a research project between the university and the IJR.
