The DA in the Western Cape is pleased with the funds that have been awarded to rural areas in the province, in aid of sporting activities
On 12 April 2016, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, will officially present a cheque of R1 460 000 to the Eden District’s sport federations in Ladismith. This is a much welcome allocation as it will promote sporting activities in the district. I will write to Minister Marais to inquire whether there are any additional plans to offer similar support for other less developed areas in the province.
Ricardo Mackenzie, the DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Cultural Affairs and Sport said; “During the recently held Western Cape Sport awards, we noted how well the rural areas had done despite the many challenges they face. This prompted us to make a plea to the Department, calling for more assistance to be handed out to these areas as there clearly was talent that needed to be unearthed and nurtured. We therefore welcome the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape for making this meaningful contribution to the Eden District.
“In my Capacity as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, I will ensure that the Standing committee monitors how the funds are spent in order to ensure that the money gets to the clubs and organisations that deserve it the most, and where it can make the most impact.
“The allocation reiterates the Departments commitment to youth development and the use of sport as not only as a stepping stone for the most vulnerable in our communities but also as a means to unify our communities and create social cohesion. We therefore welcome these initiatives by the Minister.”
