ROUND two of the 2015 Engen Volkswagen Cup championship takes place at Killarney Raceway in Cape Town on Saturday, April 11. With just a single round of the season completed, the event will be an unpredictable affair – but there are hints of what motorsport fans can expect.
Round one saw four bonus points awarded, pole position for race one and one point for each of the three races. All four of these points were claimed by Sheldon van der Linde (1 – Champion) who claimed the 2014 title in this series.
Thanks to three race wins, Van der Linde is also the 2015 Engen Volkswagen Cup championship leader – by a margin of 21 points. With such a strong lead, Van der Linde will be hoping his competition in the series will be battling amongst each other to gain their own advantage, allowing him to further extend his points standing.
Just 10 points separate positions two through six, with Tasmin Pepper (31 – PG Glass / Plastomark) in the lead of this group, followed by Masters racers Mathew Hodges (M1 – Makopano / Phoenix Signs / 959 Panelbeaters) and Juan Gerber (M8 – Haupt Racing). Shaun la Reservee (9 – Alpine Motors / Oakley / Compendium Insurance) and Trevor Bland (M2 – PG Glass / Alpine Motors) round out the top six sharing identical points.
For the first time in Engen Volkswagen Cup racing, the leading positions are split evenly between the younger competitors and the Masters racers. The 2015 season marks a point where the junior members of the series will find themselves fighting just as hard amongst each other as with the Masters for the overall championship honours.
This sets the stage for an action-packed season with the seven rounds still to run for Engen Volkswagen Cup racing this year set to be a battle for every inch of track position.
Unlike round one, the Engen Volkswagen Cup competitors will contest two races – rather than three – which should motivate the competitors even further to deliver their best. Fewer points available on race day means the racers will need to be on form right from the start in order to emerge victorious at Killarney.
The Engen Volkswagen Cup Polo Vivo racers will deliver on national racing action at the Extreme Festival competition in the Western Cape, with the usual mix of close racing and some of the bumper-bashing antics that the series is known for.
