The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate advises residents that there will be a minor disruption in recycling collection services in some areas that use clear bags for recycling, from Tuesday, 1 July to Wednesday, 2 July 2025. From 3 July 2025 these affected areas currently receiving this service (clear bags) fortnightly will transition to a weekly collection schedule.
The City’s highly-beneficial recycling service will become more frequent, assisting residents to clear their recycling goods more often while still seeing waste diverted from landfills. While the service will become a weekly one, the City regrets any inconvenience associated with the short disruption of recycling services on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Residents can find the details and locations of private recycling collectors or buy-back centres on the City’s Waste Recyclers’ Map in the interim.
Residents must note that it is only the frequency of collection that is changing. The collection day will remain the same.
The following areas are affected and will transition to a weekly collection schedule when services resume:
- Far South: Cape Point northwards to Tokai Road and surrounding areas
- Helderberg Region: Strand, Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay, Macassar, Lwandle, and surrounds
- City Bowl: Gardens, Woodstock, Salt River to Rosebank
- Other areas: Pinelands, Parklands, Blouberg, Sunningdale and surrounds, Hout Bay, Camps Bay, Bakoven, Sea Point and surrounds
Newly-appointed contractors (where applicable) will be issuing direct communication with residents, including contact details and area-specific information.
‘This service enhancement is made possible by the completion of the Coastal Park Material Recovery Facility – a state-of-the-art recycling centre developed and funded by the City, and operated by the private sector through a competitive tender process. The facility was established to boost recycling in the City by providing the operator with the infrastructure to sort and bale recyclables for sale to industry, where they can be reused in manufacturing processes.
‘I encourage all those who are not yet taking advantage of the service to start separating your recyclables and leave these out for collection. You will be surprised how much you can reduce the waste you send to landfill,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
