Statement by Jan de Villiers MP – DA National Spokesperson:
The Democratic Alliance Federal Executive decided to apply clause 6.2.6.3 of the DA’s federal constitution to the Stellenbosch Municipality to have the current deputy executive mayor, Mynard Slabbert, resign from his position. Mr Slabbert remains a councillor and representative of the party.
The DA caucus voted overwhelmingly in support of a motion of no confidence in the deputy executive mayor.
The Federal Executive met on Wednesday 27 May and decided to invoke the relevant rules to remove Mr Slabbert as deputy mayor.
Councillor Slabbert has been given 48 hours to resign from the position.
His resignation from the deputy executive mayor position will not impact his party membership of the DA or his role as councillor. The DA thanks him for his service as deputy mayor.
The DA, in line with our commitment to govern well, will ensure that our office bearers throughout all levels of government carry the support and confidence of their colleagues and the party structures in which they operate.
A new deputy executive mayor will be elected in due course following the DA’s prescribed procedures to fill the post.
