New Release – Jan 10 2022

Rip Curl South Africa proudly announces the first Rip Curl GromSearch contest for 2023. The competition is a Surfing South Africa event and will be held on the weekend of 4th-5th February at Long Beach in Cape Town.

This year will see some significant changes to the Rip Curl GromSearch Series, with the most notable being:

• There will be five events this year, up from the three events of last year.

• The premier division of the series is the U16 division. The U12 and U14 divisions are therefore allowed to surf in their own divisions as well as the U16 division.

• There will be series winners this year, and the top four results out of five will determine the 2023 Rip Curl Gromsearch Series Results.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Series has been a great stepping stone for the recent champions of our sport. Former International GromSearch competitors include the likes of Jordy Smith, Kolohe Andino, Filipe Toledo, Gabriel Medina, Mason Ho, Stephanie Gilmore and Tyler Wright.

“We’re very excited for this year’s Rip Curl GromSearch series,” said Rip Curl South Africa’s CEO Stuart Daykin. “With five events in the 2023 series, we can expect some top performances from the best junior surfers in South Africa. Good luck to all competitors for the first event in Cape Town.”

The GromSearch series allows kids to compete against the best surfers in the same age bracket from their country. This format provides these groms with an insight into a life of competitive surfing and gives them the invaluable experience of surfing and competing in different waves around the country.

“In 2022, Surfing South Africa was stoked to partner with Rip Curl, who sponsored three popular Rip Curl Gromsearch events as part of the SA Surf Tour,” said Robin de Kock, SSA General Manager. “We are so pleased that there will be five Rip Curl Gromsearch contests this year. The first of these gets underway at Long Beach in Kommetjie on February 4th & 5th. The final Rip Curl Gromsearch will take place at Seal Point on the weekend before the start of the SA Junior Championships in Jeffreys Bay. With the main focus on the U16 Girls & Boys, the Rip Curl Gromsearch contests will determine Series Champions, with four of the five events counting towards the final series results. What a great way to start 2023.”

The Rip Curl GromSearch contests are all Premier SAST events, with 1,000 points going to the winners and prizemoney per Premier events.
