Robben Island Penguin Rescue

4 September 2020 by Con Tributor

Marc de Vos, NSRI Table Bay station commander, said: At 11h43, Thursday, 3 September, NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated following a request from SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) to evacuate an African penguin found injured on Robben Island.

SANCCOB and Robben Island members had the penguin in their care on the Island.

The sea rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom was launched and on arrival at Murray Bay harbour the penguin was transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to our NSRI Table Bay sea rescue station in the care of a SANCCOB member.

The penguin, with injuries from unknown causes, was transported to SANCCOB where it is receiving medical care and rehabilitation and while still in ICU the penguin is in a stable condition, recovering and doing well.
