The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has started major road improvements across Rugby, Montague Gardens, Century City, Cape Farms, Parklands, Brooklyn, and Melkbosstrand. Starting today, Tuesday, 5 May 2026, teams will be working to fix and upgrade local streets until 30 June 2026. To keep traffic moving, general work or ancillary work will take place Monday to Sunday between 07:00 and 17:00, while the resurfacing of roads will happen at night from 19:00 to 05:30. These dates may shift slightly if the weather turns or if there are unexpected delays.
‘With winter fast approaching, we are working hard to finish as many roads as possible to keep Cape Town moving on safe, reliable surfaces during the rainy days ahead. I want to thank residents, road users and local businesses for their patience while we carry out this essential maintenance. These regular upgrades are vital to keep our road network in good condition for years to come,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The following road segments will be worked on in each suburb:
- Rugby: Road resurfacing along Da Gama Street, Vasco Street, Lady Anne Walk and Princess Alice Avenue.
- Montague Gardens: Road resurfacing along Bosmansdam Road and Koeberg Road.
- Century City: Road resurfacing along Century Boulevard.
- Cape Farms area: Grading of Zonnekus Road and Vogelvlei Road gravel roads.
- Parklands: Temporary propping for stormwater manholes in St John’s Wood Road and Parklands Main Road, and kerb and verge repairs at 18 Wimbledon Way. There will also be temporary propping and construction of new stormwater manholes to improve drainage efficiency and prevent water build-up.
- Brooklyn: Construction of new manholes on Koeberg Ramp Bypass Road, Kings Road and Section Road. There will also be temporary propping and construction of new stormwater manholes to improve drainage efficiency and prevent water build-up.
- Melkbosstrand: Pedestrian road markings work and installation of signage at the Otto Du Plessis and Melkbosstrand Road intersection to enhance pedestrian safety and encourage active mobility.
During these roadworks, the City will remove the old road surface and replace it with a new layer of asphalt. Damaged curbs and gutters will also be repaired where needed. Once the work is finished, all road markings will be repainted and clearly restored.
Traffic delays are expected, road users are encouraged to plan for extra travel time or use alternative routes while these improvements are under way.
