The City of Cpe Town is busy with a project at the Salt River station precinct in Salt River to improve pedestrian safety and access to the railway station and the MyCiTi bus stop along Foundry Road.
The improvements to the Salt River station precinct commenced in September 2025 and if all goes as planned the project will be completed within the next six months.
Many commuters who need to catch a train or the MyCiTi bus to their destinations walk along one of the streets in this precinct. As such, the City’s Urban Planning and Design Department embarked on this project to improve universal access and general safety for pedestrians, and to make the walk as pleasant as possible by upgrading eight roads and pavements, some with brick paving.
The project includes the following roads:
- Foundry Road between Alfred Street and Portland Road (sidewalks and road)
- Foundry Road between London Road and Spencer Road (narrowing of the road and widening of the sidewalk)
- The intersection of Foundry Road and Spencer Road
- Spencer Road (sidewalks on the clinic-side)
- London Road (sidewalks and road)
- Portland Road (sidewalks and road)
- Westminster Road (sidewalks only)
- Greef Street (sidewalks only)
- Junction Road (sidewalks only)
- Planting of trees along Foundry Road between the intersections with Albert Road and Spencer Road
‘Salt River Station is one of the most important rail interchanges in Cape Town, connecting commuters across the Northern, Central, Cape Flats and Southern lines to the inner city and surrounding economic hubs. Every day, thousands of people move through this precinct, many of whom rely on public transport to access jobs, education, and essential services. This is why these upgrades are so important – they make it safer and easier for commuters to move through the area. This project is about more than infrastructure: it is about dignity, accessibility, and ensuring that our transport precincts work for the people who depend on them every day.
‘I’ve visited the precinct yesterday to see how the work is coming along. The project was delayed some time ago due to underground services that had to be excavated by hand to ensure the services to our residents and businesses in the area were not interrupted. This took longer than we anticipated, but I’m happy to say that everything is back on track, and that we are making progress.
‘One of the key interventions is to narrow Foundry Road between London Road and Spencer Road in front of the station. Then, to also widen the sidewalk along this section as it is being used by most of the commuters on and from their way to the station. The narrowing of the road will assist with traffic calming, which will result in safer conditions for pedestrians who are dropped off along Albert Road by minibus-taxis and walk down Spencer or London Road towards the station.
‘We are also going to plant trees along Foundry Road once the work to the roads and sidewalks are complete so that the area becomes greener and more enticing over time, as the trees grow and provide shade,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
Work is currently ongoing along Foundry Road between the intersections with Alfred Street and Portland Road. By April, the contractor will commence with work along London Road, Greef Street, Portland Road, and Westminster Road.
‘I want to thank the businesses and commuters for their patience while we are working in this precinct. We are trying our best to limit the disruptions and inconvenience and are looking forward to completing this project by the end of August,’ said Alderman Andrews.
